- [Desk Rejection: Focusing on household air pollution is critical for achieving equitable clean air for all](https://householdenergy.org/desk-rejection-focusing-on-household-air-pollution-is-critical-for-achieving-equitable-clean-air-for-all/): The recent Air Pollution Special Issue (Science 385) does a laudable job highlighting the global scientific community’s ability to quantify air pollution and its impacts and translate findings into policy-relevant recommendations. We contend, however, that it gives insufficient consideration to one of the oldest and leading sources of health-damaging pollution: cooking and heating with solid fuels (wood, dung, charcoal, coal, crop residues).
- [Affordable, available, unsafe: Wee tiny LPG "cans"](https://householdenergy.org/affordable-available-unsafe-wee-tiny-lpg-cans/): We are kicking off* a new project around Phnom Penh, in peri-urban areas that may be ready to transition from cooking with biomass to cooking with electricity, leapfrogging LPG. The trial is motivated by HAPIN and by interest in determining barriers to cooking with electricity, as has been done for LPG and for many so-called improved or advanced stoves. From the Guardian: According to a Guardian analysis, from 2020 to 2022 the real emissions from the “in-house” or company-owned data centers of Google, Microsoft, Meta and Apple are probably about 662% – or 7.62 times – higher than officially reported. … The International Energy Agency stated that data centers already accounted for 1% to 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2022 – and that was before the AI boom began with ChatGPT’s launch at the end of that year. - [Widespread Clean Cooking Fuel Scale-Up and under-5 Lower Respiratory Infection Mortality: An Ecological Analysis in Ecuador, 1990–2019](https://householdenergy.org/widespread-clean-cooking-fuel-scale-up-and-under-5-lower-respiratory-infection-mortality-an-ecological-analysis-in-ecuador-1990-2019/): We documented cooking fuel use and cause-coded child mortalities at the canton (county) level in Ecuador from 1990 to 2019 (in four periods, 1988–1992, 1999–2003, 2008–2012, and 2015–2019) and characterized the association between clean fuel use and the rate of under-5 LRI mortalities. Our findings suggest that the widespread household transition from using biomass to clean-burning fuels for cooking reduced under-5 LRI mortalities in Ecuador over the last 30 y.
- [A global review of the state of the evidence of household air pollution’s contribution to ambient fine particulate matter and their related health impacts](https://householdenergy.org/a-global-review-of-the-state-of-the-evidence-of-household-air-pollutions-contribution-to-ambient-fine-particulate-matter-and-their-related-health-impacts/): Direct exposure to household air pollution (HAP) from polluting fuels results in 2.3 million premature yearly deaths globally. HAP emitted indoors escapes outdoors and is a leading source of outdoor ambient fine particulate air pollution (AAP) in low- and middle-income countries, often being a larger contributor than well-recognized sources. We review published scientific studies that model the contribution of HAP to AAP at global and major sub-regional scales and find that HAP is a dominant source of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) globally.

- [Using high-frequency household surveys to describe energy use in rural North India during the COVID-19 pandemic](https://householdenergy.org/liquefied-petroleum-gas-or-biomass-for-cooking-and-effects-on-birth-weight-2/): Household energy surveys typically occur a few times at most during a study. We deployed more frequent surveys -- every couple of months in Jharkhand, every week for a couple of months in Bihar -- to better understand household preferences and what impacts fuel use choices. Repeat phone surveys -- whether weekly or monthly -- provide important nuance on the dynamics of household energy use.

Little is known about how well these measurements, commonly used exposure metrics in health risk assessment of the impacts of household air pollution exposure, predict longer-term averages. We evaluate different combinations of measurement strategies in this paper, leveraging continuous monitoring in Guatemalan kitchens for 120-300 days.

- [Liquefied Petroleum Gas or Biomass for Cooking and Effects on Birth Weight.](https://householdenergy.org/liquefied-petroleum-gas-or-biomass-for-cooking-and-effects-on-birth-weight/): Birthweight findings from the HAPIN LPG stove and fuel trial intention-to-treat analyses found an adjusted mean difference of 19.5 g (95% confidence interval, −10.1 to 49.2). Secondary analyses indicate a stronger effect amongst those who received the intervention earlier in pregnancy. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine. 
- [Indoor Air Pollution and Health: Bridging Perspectives from Developing and Developed Countries.](https://householdenergy.org/indoor-air-pollution-and-health-bridging-perspectives-from-developing-and-developed-countries/): Much of the global population spends most of their time indoors; however, air pollution measurement, a proxy of exposure, occurs primarily outdoors. We describe, compare, and suggest potential areas of dialogue between the two disparate but linked fields commonly referred to as indoor air pollution and household air pollution, both of which  lead to substantial exposures to air pollutants damaging to human health. 
- [Exposure Contrasts of Pregnant Women during the Household Air Pollution Intervention Network Randomized Controlled Trial](https://householdenergy.org/exposure-contrasts-of-pregnant-women-during-the-household-air-pollution-intervention-network-randomized-controlled-trial/): Exposure reductions due to the HAPIN LPG fuel and stove intervention were large and sustained. Median postrandomization exposures of PM2.5 in the intervention arm were lower by 66% at the first (71.5 vs. 24), and second follow-up visits (69.5 vs. 23.7) compared to controls.
